Over the decades, the Library has become a key pillar for all those seeking knowledge, inspiration and research resources in the natural sciences, engineering and many other fields of expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From its humble beginnings as a place to borrow specialised literature, the library has grown from a distinctive institution combining a rich collection of modern information technology and professionally trained staff. Our library has always kept pace with the needs and demands of the profession and adapted to a changing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are proud to have been able to become a place where students, researchers and experts meet, exchange ideas and create new knowledge. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we are celebrating not only our past achievements, but also all the opportunities that lie ahead. It is important that we remain true to our mission of being a beacon of knowledge that will continue to shine through time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to the growth and success of our library. a COVID infection protect you from a severe case of flu?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 how past respiratory viral infections affect future unrelated infections could lead to therapies to boost general antiviral immunity - and possible pandemic preparedness. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are more than 200 different viruses in the world that can cause infection and then disease in humans. Most of us will be infected several times in our lifetime. Can an encounter with one virus affect how our immune system will react to another? If so, how? Does it weaken your defences, strengthen them or have some other effect?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By analysing mice infected first with SARS-CoV-2 and then with influenza A virus, the scientists found that getting sick with COVID has a protective effect against the worst effects of flu, and that this memory response comes from an unexpected part of the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out that epigenetic changes in macrophages (innate immune cells that are among the first to respond to the threat of the virus) after the COVID epidemic developed a kind of \"memory\" that allowed these cells to better defend themselves against the unrelated virus. Scientists have long thought that immunological memory was limited to adaptive immune cells, although recent research suggests otherwise. The chatbot aims to reduce users' anxiety, improve positive emotions and guide them towards better everyday choices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MIT researchers have created a system that allows users to have an online text conversation with an artificial intelligence simulation of their potential future self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system, called Future You, is designed to help young people improve their sense of self-continuity in the future, a psychological concept that describes how connected a person feels to their future self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research has shown that a stronger sense of self-continuity in the future can have a positive impact on how people make long-term decisions. This plant family comprises around 34,000 species, some of which are well known, such as artichokes, chamomile, dahlias and lettuce. A new global database on the distribution and evolutionary history of all Asteraceae species has now been compiled and analysed by an international research team. The so-called kinetic launcher was targeted by Nasa in September 2022 at the smaller twin of the Dimorfos\/Didimos asteroid pair. Hera will fly into space on Falcon 9, a SpaceX rocket. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earth and asteroids collide all the time, but it's mostly smaller rocks. The main source of most asteroids at our end of the Solar System is the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, where there are more than a million asteroids larger than one kilometre across, plus lots of smaller ones. Jupiter's gravity occasionally pushes an asteroid towards the inner part of the Solar System, but there are also threats from more distant parts of the Solar System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list of potentially hazardous asteroids over the next 100 years is being calculated and updated in <a href=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/sentry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Near-Earth Object Studies Centre<\/a>, which operates under the umbrella of NASA. Machine learning methods are also used to help find dangerous asteroids. It was a risky manoeuvre, as no one had ever attempted anything like it before, and if the missile had missed its target or arrived too quickly, it would have caused widespread destruction. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starship had some problems on its return from space. At an altitude of around 60 kilometres, the heat broke through the heat shield and started to eat away at the flaps that stabilise and steer the spacecraft. Starship nevertheless reached the ground in a controlled manner, reoriented itself to a vertical position and \"landed\" on the water surface. This year, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their groundbreaking discoveries in machine learning, which have enabled the development of artificial neural networks. These networks, which work in a similar way to the human brain, are key to understanding how computers process and analyse data. Hopfield developed methods that allow patterns to be stored and reconstructed, while Hinton pioneered the autonomous recognition of features in data. Their work is the foundation of modern AI applications, including image recognition and natural language. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Sa\u0161o D\u017eeroski, Head of the Knowledge Technologies Unit at the Jo\u017eef Stefan Institute (IJS), points out that this recognition is important for understanding the impact of AI on different scientific disciplines, from physics to medicine. Despite these achievements, Hinton expresses deep concern about the rapid development of AI, warning that the technology he helped develop poses an existential threat to humanity, as AI could eventually take control of human decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Marko Grobelnik, a research associate at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the IJS, agrees that the benefits of AI are enormous, but the dangers are just as great. The prize is surprising because it is not directly related to physics, but has a wide impact on various scientific disciplines, including biology and medicine. Artificial intelligence has the potential to influence all aspects of our lives, from healthcare to communications, and this brings with it greater responsibility. D\u017eeroski points out that how we use AI is crucial, and this is linked to our ethical and moral standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the major drawbacks of AI is its inexplicability; we often cannot fully understand how AI reaches its conclusions and this poses additional challenges to trust in the technology. Researchers are working to develop safeguards to prevent unethical use of AI, but this is a complex challenge. AI has the potential to revolutionise our lives, but at the same time we need to be cautious in its development and use. Despite the breakthroughs that AI brings, a key question remains: how will we deal with technology that could exceed our capabilities? Australian company Sun Cable will build solar farms on 12,400 hectares near Elliot and then deliver electricity to Darwin. Up to ten gigawatts of solar power and four gigawatts of battery storage will be installed near Elliot in the first phase. Ultrasound represents a promising solution for in vivo therapeutic applications as it allows non-invasive stimulation of cells with high spatial and temporal precision. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remote regulation of cells in deep tissue remains an important challenge. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound offers promise for in vivo therapies due to its non-invasive nature and precise control. This study uses pulsed ultrasound to control calcium influx into mammalian cells and develops a therapeutic cellular device that responds to acoustic stimulation in deep tissue without overexpression of calcium channels or gas vesicles. Pulsed ultrasound parameters are set to induce calcium influx into HEK293 cells. In addition, the cells are engineered to express a designed calcium-responsive transcription factor that controls the expression of a selected therapeutic gene, constituting a therapeutic cellular device. The functionality of the engineered sonogenetic system is demonstrated in vivo in mice, where the implanted cytokine-producing anti-inflammatory cellular device effectively alleviates acute colitis as evidenced by improved colonic morphology and histopathology. This improvement is achieved by adjusting three key factors:&nbsp;<em>(1)<\/em>&nbsp;<em>the time duration of the laser light<\/em>used to excite the material,&nbsp;<em>(2)<\/em>&nbsp;<em>the geometry of the photoacoustic source<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>(3)<\/em>&nbsp;<em>the nature of the light-absorbing material<\/em>. The study aims to improve the efficacy and targeting of medical therapies using ultrasound, which involve the passage of macromolecules through tissues and the preparation of tumours for therapy.The results are published in the journal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.nanoen.2024.110236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nano Energy<\/a>&nbsp;(IF= 16.8). <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LASTEH and IJS researchers have developed a two-step protocol involving the dispersion of graphene nanosheets to create a highly absorbent composite on a flexible substrate. This composite shows relatively high optical absorption and good homogeneity even when the thickness is reduced below 10 \u00b5m, which is an advantage for the fabrication of photoacoustic transducers. The key advantage of using graphene is, in particular, its good stability in different solvents, without the need for special surface pre-treatment, and the possibility of in situ decoration of graphene with gold nanoparticles without the use of additional reducing agents. Paradoxically, as many as 50 % vaccines are discarded solely due to inadequate maintenance of the appropriate temperature during transport from the manufacturer to the end user. Currently, the delivery of vaccines faces three major challenges: (1)&nbsp;<em>strict restrictions on air transport due to the dangers of the refrigerants used<\/em>, (2)&nbsp;<em>high energy use of vaccine storage refrigeration units<\/em>&nbsp;and (3)&nbsp;<em>the high environmental impact of certain refrigerants<\/em>. science in Slovenia is published in the framework of the SPOZNZNaj project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last decade, there has been increasing talk about open science, which aims to make research data available to researchers and the wider public on a FAIR basis and to facilitate its re-use. The project <a href=\"https:\/\/projekt-spoznaj.si\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GET TO KNOW<\/a> was therefore <strong>the first handbook on open science, entitled <em>Get to know \"FAIR\", Handbook on Open Science in Slovenia<\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It raises fundamental issues related to the implementation of open science and illustrates existing solutions and options for its development. It is a collaborative effort between representatives of the various research organisations involved in the KNOW project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the editor, Dr Sonja Bezjak, the aim of the handbook is to introduce the basic concepts of open science to various actors from a wide range of scientific disciplines in the Slovenian language, and to introduce them to the research infrastructure and services that serve open science in the Slovenian environment, while at the same time being inextricably linked to the European and broader international research space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Handbook is aimed at researchers at different stages of their scientific careers, research funders, research organisation management, libraries, data professionals in various roles, publication and data repositories, publishers and editors of scientific journals, citizen researchers and others working in science or with an interest in scientific results and the processes by which they are produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim is for them to identify opportunities to contribute to open science, learn about their responsibilities and find information on where to find support or who to support and how to do so. In a new study, researchers have discovered that a bacterium from this family can break down plastic and ultimately use it for food. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have also identified the enzyme used by the bacterium to break it down. This discovery opens up new possibilities for developing bacteria-based engineering solutions to help clean up plastic waste that would otherwise be difficult to dispose of.<strong> <\/strong>Northwestern University has discovered a process by which cells of the bacterium Comamonas break down plastic. First, they chew the plastic into small pieces called nanoplastics. Then they secrete a special enzyme that breaks down the plastic even further. As the name suggests, there are two essential features: \"small\" means that they are small power generating units, and \"modular\" means that as many components as possible are manufactured in factories and assembled on site to form a complete unit. SMRs are compact units, typically up to 300 MW. The reactors are designed to provide a high level of safety and flexibility to integrate with renewable energy sources, which helps to reduce emissions. The smaller size of the reactors allows for a lower initial investment, which is particularly attractive for remote areas where a large nuclear infrastructure is not feasible. Among the most promising technologies are pressurised water and boiling water reactors based on known concepts, as well as advanced systems such as molten salt reactors. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, there are small nuclear reactors of just 10 MW in use in navies, with more than 160 ships and submarines equipped with these reactors. These reactors are much smaller than those on land, and this is particularly true of nuclear submarines, which are almost miniature compared with conventional power stations. They are designed with an excellent weight\/power ratio, which allows them to operate for a long time without changing fuel and to be highly strategic, while they must also remain extremely quiet to avoid detection. The economics of these reactors are not crucial, as the navies of the major superpowers are not burdened by the cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the only commercially operating SMR is Russia's Akademik Lomonosov, a 32 MW floating nuclear power plant. Nevertheless, more than 90 different designs are being developed around the world, showing the potential of this technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SMRs offer promising opportunities for innovation in nuclear energy, with the promise of lower risk and faster construction. Challenges include poor economic indicators and lengthy regulatory processes that hinder their widespread adoption.
