Science Communication Masterclass on 2 December 2024 from 9:00 to 15:00 at CTK.
The second edition of the seminar will take place on 9 December 2024 from 9:30 to 15:30 (half an hour later!) at the University Library Maribor, Gospejna ulica 10, 2000 Maribor.
The seminar aims to enhance science communication skills - from critical evaluation and synthesis of knowledge to clear presentation of scientific methodology and research results. The seminar will consist of a theoretical part with lectures and a practical workshop.
The seminar is open to all researchers, regardless of experience, who want to improve their knowledge and skills in presenting science in public.
The aim of the seminar is to empower participants to effectively communicate their research knowledge to a wider audience in a clear, engaging and understandable way.
The seminar is led by experienced science communicators Dr Sašo Dolenc and Dr Zarja Muršič.
In the theoretical part of the seminar, we will explain the basic concepts of science communication. Particular emphasis will be placed on knowledge synthesis, assessing the uncertainty of scientific claims and clearly presenting research methodology.
We will present key tools and approaches for effective delivery of scientific content through a variety of media - from traditional channels to modern forms such as podcasts, video content and social networks.
In the first part, Tinca Lukan from Theory and Story, which will introduce participants to the skills of communicating science on social networks.
In the practical part of the seminar, participants will test their knowledge in practice. They will work in groups to prepare short presentations on selected scientific topics, choosing from a variety of communication strategies and media.
This will be followed by an in-depth discussion where we will analyse and evaluate the content presented and highlight opportunities for improvement. The focus will be on learning through practical examples, constructive feedback and exchange of experiences among participants.
At the end of the seminar, we will summarise the knowledge and experience gained and discuss the next steps to develop competences in science communication.
The one-day seminar will last a total of six school hours and will include a lunch break for relaxed networking and exchange of ideas among participants. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance.
Places are limited. The seminar is free of charge.
The Masterclass is organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation as part of the Science Month project. The event is funded under the Open Science Action Plan (Action 6.2 of ReZrIS30).

| 11.45-12.30 Workshop 1 - Understanding science: how to evaluate and summarise scientific work In groups, participants analyse a selected scientific topic, evaluate key data, methods and findings, and reflect on uncertainties and ambiguities. The focus will be on the parts of the research process that are crucial for the successful communication of science to different audiences. |
| 12.30-13.15 Workshop 2 - Communicating science: crafting an understandable and engaging story Based on a preliminary analysis, participants develop a short presentation tailored to a specific target audience (e.g. general public, secondary school students, decision-makers). Groups can choose between different formats (presentation, video, social media post). |

| 13.45-14.30 Group presentations and analysis Each group presents its own theme and approach. The mentor and mentee, as well as the participants, give constructive feedback on clarity, adaptation and effectiveness. |
