Training: observing the Earth from space

The Central Technical Library (Trg republike 3, 1000 Ljubljana) hosts the event Earth Observation from Space training as part of Learning with Space - Climate Detectives, organised by ESERA Slovenia:

28 - 29 November 2025

Join us to learn more about real satellite images and learn how to apply them in your learning environment. You will explore the Copernicus Browser (The Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem) web tool using selected clips so that you can track changes over time from space. This tool offers free access to satellite images from various Earth observation missions, allowing you to explore topics ranging from agriculture to volcanoes and fires. In a practical example, we will learn how to select and compare satellite images, create a time lapse and learn about different visualisations such as the NDVI, an index used to monitor plant health.

Copernicus Browser is a dynamic, easy-to-use web app that brings global satellite imagery into your classroom and research projects, complementing field data to enrich your classroom with up-to-date observations of the Earth and stimulate students' engagement in studying environmental change and understanding global issues through a space-based lens.

Training with a practical workshop will be provided by Blažka Bojnec, a graduate engineer in geodesy and geoinformatics, and May Čapelnik, a student of the second cycle study programme in geodesy and geoinformatics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, University of Ljubljana, under the mentorship of Asst. Ana Potočnik Buhvald and prof. dr. Kristof Oshtir.
